In 1733 when there was a struggle for the throne of Datia, Nanheshah Gujar helped Indrajit to come to power there. For his endeavour he was given( by Indrajit) the Fort of Samathar and the title of 'Rajdhar'. Later his grandson added 5 more villages to the State.

The 'Kiledar' (fort incharge) assumed independence at the time when the Marathas came into this area. The Britishers could never overpower this small Kingdom and ultimately on the 27th of November, 1817 they signed a treaty with the ruler Ranjit Singh, which makes Samathar one of the three Sandhi (treaty) States of Bundelkhand.
